How Long Does It Take To Recondition a Battery?

Batteries are an essential part of our daily life. All the important things that we use, run on batteries. It can be either cellphones or tv remotes or even cars, everything requires batteries to run. Hence it can be irritating when these batteries are to be replaced frequently or when they are not functioning properly.

Do you like spending money, again and again, to buy batteries whenever they become inefficient? No one likes it. To get rid of this issue, thus came the process of battery reconditioning.

This process of battery reconditioning works miraculously in some cases and completely restores the health and full capacity of your older battery.

But is this reconditioning a difficult process? How long does it take to recondition a battery? Let us find out all the details in this article.

How long does it take to recondition a battery?

How long does it take to recondition a battery?

I have heard people saying that they took nearly a month to fully recondition their old batteries. I have also heard when people said that they have reconditioned their batteries in just a few hours of time.

Which one is true? Considering the above two statements, both of them seem contradictory. Some batteries are getting fixed in just a few hours, whereas some batteries are taking a month to get reconditioned.

You may get a doubt. What is the actual time for this reconditioning process?

Actually, there is no straight answer regarding the time it takes to recondition a battery. It is because, the duration of battery reconditioning process depends upon various factors. All these factors have a major impact on the time period of the process being completed.

These can be some factors that can influence the reconditioning time

 1. Battery size

Reconditioning of smaller and bigger batteries is not one and the same. Smaller batteries are easy to recondition and usually late take time for the process to get completed. A small battery can be usually reconditioned in few hours itself.

Whereas bigger and complicated batteries take longer durations for the reconditioning process.

Hence the type and size of the battery is one of the important factors that can influence the duration of battery reconditioning.

 2. Battery condition

This is the other factor that can impact the reconditioning time of your battery. Some batteries stay in working condition even though they are slightly defective. Whereas some batteries have serious repairs that need to be done.

Thus batteries in better condition could be reconditioned quickly than batteries that are severely damaged.

For example, A car battery which is subjected to less sulfation can be reconditioned quickly than the battery that is heavily sulfated. Car batteries that are heavily sulfated can take months to get reconditioned and sometimes they even become useless.

 3. Method of reconditioning

Various methods are used for reconditioning different types of batteries.

You can perform the battery reconditioning process in many ways. You can use some chemical processes, or use special chargers or do it by using other methods.

The methods adopted to recondition the battery influences the duration of battery reconditioning.

Using special chargers can complete the battery reconditioning process quickly sometimes when compared with the chemical processes.

Duration of the reconditioning process- how long?

The process of reconditioning is not the same for all kinds of batteries. That’s why all kinds of batteries do not take the same time to get reconditioned. Different batteries take different time duration to get reconditioned completely.

How Long Does It Take To Recondition a Battery?

Consider a car battery which is heavily sulfated.

In such cases, smart chargers work well. You can use a smart charger and put the battery on slow charge at 12v/2amp. In this case, you need to leave the battery to charge for at least 24 hours. Leaving it for 36 hours sometimes can also be done depending upon the condition of the battery.

After finishing the charging process, if the voltage does not show more than 12.43v, you must charge the battery for another 12 hours to finish the reconditioning process and make the car battery functional.

Laptop batteries

When you consider laptop batteries, the batteries used are lithium-ion batteries. Even these batteries can be reconditioned and brought back to life in some cases. Sometimes they can be reconditioned by following a simple deep discharge and full recharge cycle. This process can fix the problem sometimes.

Otherwise, place the laptop battery in a closed bag in a freezer for a duration of about 12 hours. After 12 hours, clean the battery and recharge it fully. This process of charging the battery for 12 hours and charging it fully can sometimes recondition the battery successfully.

What about other golf cart batteries and motorcycle batteries?

The batteries used in golf carts and motorcycles are similar to your car batteries. The batteries used are often lead-acid batteries. When you want to recondition golf cart batteries, use a trickle charger at 2amp and charge the battery for 24 to 48 hours. Thus the reconditioning process can take two days to get completed.

How long does it take to recondition a motorcycle battery?

In case of a motorcycle battery, the reconditioning process can take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours. This variation depends upon the type of charger being used and the condition of the battery.

While using a trickle charger, I have heard people who said that the charging process took 12 to 20 hours to get finished.
